In the 14 months since 23 Division’s Somali Liaison Unit (SLU) was first initiated, the six-officer unit has taken giant strides towards achieving its goal of enhancing police relations with Etobicoke’s Somali community.

“The Somali community outreach project strives to achieve meaningful dialogue and build trusting relationships with Toronto’s Somali-Canadian community through the provision of highly visible, proven and community-supportive policing services. And really, in a nutshell, that says it all,” said Baptist, who served as second-in-command at 23 Division until January, when he was promoted to Superintendent at 13 Division.

One of the current priorities of the SLU is bridging the language divide between its officers and the community it serves – and in order to so, all six SLU officers recently began taking Somali language classes.

SLU Sgt. Chris Laush greeted those listening in on Tuesday night’s town hall with a traditional “As-Salaam-Alaikum.”

“That was one of the first greetings I learned when I joined the unit, and essentially it’s a greeting that we use quite a bit in breaking the barrier when we talk to the community at Dixon Road. Since then, we’ve gone one step further,” he said, referring to the unit’s weekly Somali lessons at 23 Division.

“Now, we have a whole list of greetings to say, from ‘welcome’ to ‘hello, how are you?’ and ‘good morning’ and ‘good afternoon,’ and last Thursday we learned the Somali alphabet, which was very interesting to say the least. We’ve got a lot of work cut out for us, but we have a great instructor and we’re looking forward to our classes.”

In terms of outreach to Somali youth, Const. Raman Sandhu said she and her fellow SLU officers have initiated a whole host of activities to engage young people in the communities of Dixon Road, Queen’s Plate Drive and Islington Avenue.

Every day of the week, in fact, there’s a different program bringing Somali youth face-to-face with SLU officers – Monday evening basketball sessions at Dixon Grove JMS; Tuesday night boy’s basketball and girls net ball at Queen’s Plate; Cool Tool School sessions on Wednesdays (at 390 Dixon Rd.) and Thursdays (at Queen’s Plate); mosque visits on Fridays; basketball games with the Somali Youth Association of Toronto (SOYAT) team on Saturdays; and soccer on Sundays at Dixon Grove JMS.

And based on the success and rave reviews from a group of kids the SLU took on a bus trip to a Toronto Argos game late last year, the unit is now also planning on a few upcoming trips to the new Ripley’s Aquarium, a Toronto Raptors basketball game, and a Toronto Rock lacrosse game.

In terms of recruitment, Sandhu said the SLU is also working on getting a youth police academy up and running as a means of encouraging Somali youth to consider a career with the Toronto Police Service.

LIBYA TO PAY COMPENSATION TO WOMEN RAPED DURING THE SO CALLED "ARAB SPRING" UPRISING

Libya will offer compensation to women raped during the 2011 NATO-backed uprising which toppled Muammar Gaddafi, its justice minister said on Wednesday, touching a taboo subject.

Hundreds of women may have been raped during the eight-month conflict, according to the International Criminal Court, which has collected evidence that pro-Gaddafi forces used rape as a weapon to spread fear among its opponents.

No exact figures for the number of women raped are available.

Human rights activists have pushed for compensation, but rape victims are often ostracized in the conservative Muslim country where discussion of the crime remains taboo, so it is not clear how many victims would actually come forward.

Justice Minister Salah al-Marghani said the cabinet had issued a law that would recognize women raped during the conflict as war victims, putting them on the same level as wounded former rebel fighters requiring medical treatment.

"This group (of women) is weak and needs our care," Marghani told reporters. "It (the law) will give them many rights...and cover also compensation."

He did not say what compensation the women would get. Other war victims are entitled to benefits that may include medical care, a safe place to stay and financial assistance.

The turmoil that has blighted Afghanistan, particularly over the past 15 years, has forced huge swathes of people out of their homes. Many of them have long since abandoned hope of ever returning.

Now there are increasing fears that the refugee situation will get much worse, with millions more predicted to flee fighting in Afghanistan.

There are an estimated 1.6 million registered Afghan refugees who, having fled conflict in their homeland over the past three decades, now live in slums and – initially makeshift, now permanent – camps in neighbouring Pakistan. Many, like 12-year-old Awal Gul, live in sprawling slums on the outskirts of Islamabad where poor health is caused by stagnant water and a lack of basic amenities. "My land is in Afghanistan, and we have nothing in Pakistan," he told Associated Press this month.

Instead of decreasing, as Pakistani authorities had hoped they might, the numbers of Afghans seeking refuge across the border is now set to dramatically increase. This week, reports emerged that Pakistan was braced for a "worst case scenario" in which an estimated three million refugees would cross from Afghanistan during 20 days in July.

If, as appears increasingly likely, Taliban militants target electoral candidates in the run-up to Afghanistan's presidential polls in April, any resulting instability when President Hamid Karzai steps aside a few months later will produce a new refugee crisis, according to Pakistani authorities. Bloomberg has reported that Pakistan now fears that a military operation to flush out Taliban and al-Qa'ida militants in Waziristan and other border areas could be "too difficult" because of the refugee situation. A further 500,000 refugees could arrive after October or November, predicted Abdul Qadir Baloch, the Pakistani federal minister for states and frontier regions.

POLICE ARREST TERROR GROUP LED BY AN IMAM PLANNING JIHAD ATTACKS IN OSH AND BISHKEK(KYRGYZSTAN)

A deputy imam of an Osh mosque was in charge of the terrorist group trained in the camps of transnational terrorist organizations in Syria and detained in southern Kyrgyzstan, the Osh police told Interfax on Wednesday.

The six detainees were planning terror attacks in Osh and Bishkek.

Detectives learned that the group leader was trained in a religious school in Syria and studied in the United Arab Emirates.

Religious leaders trained aboard often head extremist groups after their return to their home country, the police said.

A similar terrorist group led by a local mosque imam, who had been trained in a foreign country, was neutralized in Osh in November 2010.

President Yahya Jammeh has once again launched another attack on homosexuals or gays, calling them vermin, and vowing that his government "will fight them the same way we are fighting malaria-causing mosquitoes".

In an Independence Day anniversary statement delivered on his behalf by the mayors of Banjul and the Kanifing Municipality Tuesday to mark the country's 49th independence anniversary, which has been decentralised, President Jammeh said while his government wishes to maintain peaceful relations with all countries near and far, he will "never accept any ungodly, satanic and anti-human behaviour as a way of life or a human right".

"We will, therefore, not accept any friendship, aid or any other gesture that is conditional on accepting homosexuals or L.G.B.T.as they are now baptised by the powers that promote them. As far as I am concerned, L.G.B.T can only stand for Leprosy, Gonorrhoea, Bacteria and Tuberculosis; all of which are detrimental to human existence," he stated.

Homosexuality, Jammeh added, will never be tolerated and, in fact, will attract the ultimate penalty since it is intended to bring humanity to an inglorious extinction.

According to President Jammeh, The Gambia will continue to pursue a foreign policy based on equality and genuine friendship with the rest of the world.

Alimurod Makhanov doesn’t realize that his facial hairstyle went out of style 12 years ago

Tajik Muslim Alimurod Makhanov was, like many other Muslims, up to no good. He had joined the Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan, a jihadist group. Soon, he had gathered nine of his buddies together and the fun had begun. Instead of playing sports, video games, or with each other’s penises, the men had something much more sinister in mind: a bombing in Dushanbe, the capitol city of Tajikistan.

Makhanov rose through the ranks of the Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan as well as the Jamaat Ansarullah terror group. Soon, he was declared the emir of Tajikistan in both of those jihadist organizations. Together with his ass-lifting buddies, Makhanov planned to bomb political sites in Tajikistan in order to “destabilize” the country before its national election. Among the targets were the gates of Dushanbe, the National Security Committee, and the Interior Ministry.

However, the plot was foiled by Tajik counter-terrorism forces. Makhanov and his friends were detained, and all of a sudden they had a change of heart about violent jihad. How convenient! Makhanov said, “We were told [by a degreed Mullah] that a man must defend his honor through jihad.” I still don’t see the connection between blowing up buildings and defending your honor. If any Muslims out there would like to clarify, that would be much appreciated.

There’s something fishy about this Muslim named Salmon- err, Salmin. He’s a sheikh currently serving as the secretary general of the Malawi Association of Muslims, and he really has it out for gays. Malawi’s current law states that homosexuality can be punished by up to 14 years behind bars. That’s pretty extreme for something that shouldn’t be a crime. However, jailing gays isn’t enough for Idrussi. He wants them dead – because sharia says so.

Instead of addressing the numerous problems in Malawi, such as poverty and malaria, the Muslims there think everything would be better if those damned gays would stop boning each other. Idrussi stated: “Malawi is regarded as a secular state, but the country is blessed with God-fearing citizens who can’t afford to deviate from God’s commandments for the sake of pleasing others who practice the act [of homosexuality.]” If everyone feared your god so much, why are there still gays who are seeking romance in Malawi? Hmm? And what gave you the right to to tell others how they should live? Religious folk of numerous varieties suffer the same mentality, that they are the arbiters of morality and what they say should be law. They fail to consider that those who don’t agree with their beliefs aren’t trying to harm them or ruin their faith in any way; they just want to live their own lives how they choose.

“Even animals like goats don’t do this [gay sex], what more with human beings like us who were blessed with wisdom by the almighty God?” Idrussi asked. “The offenders need to be handed death penalty as a way of making sure that the issue is curbed.” Well, good to know that you’re a fan of watching goats mating, Idrussi. Seriously, do these Islamic nutjobs not consider the implications of the ridiculous (and false) arguments they give?! As for the death penalty – yep, that’s the “proud tradition of tolerance” Barack Hussein Obama claims Islam is known for. Hopefully Malawi catches up to the civilized world with regard to marriage equality and freedom from religion.
