A New Jersey man who co-founded a radical Islamic website and pleaded guilty last fall to using the Internet to make threats against Jewish groups was sentenced today to 30 months in prison, according to a report on WashingtonPost.com.
The defendant, Yousef Mohamid al-Khattab, had faced as much as five years in prison, but Judge Liam O'Grady said he imposed the shorter term on Yousef Mohamid al-Khattab so people could "understand the line" between free speech attempting to incite violence, the report said.
Mohamid al-Khattab , 45, of Atlantic City was sentenced today in federal court in Alexandria, Va.
At the sentencing Mohamid al-Khattab, who was once known as Joseph Leonard Cohen, referred to himself as a "clown" and said what he meant in his online posts and how people interpreted his writings are not the same.
He added that he was wrong and would not do it again, the Post reported.
He started the now-defunct Revolution Muslim website in 2007 with partner Jesse Curtis Morton.
Mohamid al-Khattab, who converted from Judaism, was the third person connected with Revolution Muslim to be convicted in federal court in Alexandria. Morton and another man, Zachary Chesser, admitted using the site to deliver thinly veiled threats against the creators of the "South Park" television show for perceived insults to the prophet Muhammad.
