The U.S. government announced a decision Wednesday to blacklist an Islamic militant group apparently behind a recent suicide attack in Egypt that killed three South Korean tourists.
The State Department said it has designated Ansar Bayt al-Maqdis (ABM) as a foreign terrorist organization.
The measure, taken in consultation with the Departments of Justice and Treasury, would prohibit transactions by American people and entities with the organization and freeze all of its property on U.S. soil.
Since being created in 2011, ABM has been responsible for attacks on Israel and security services and tourists in Egypt, the department said.
The group also expanded its targets to include foreign tourists and claimed responsibility for the bombing of a tour bus on the Sinai Peninsula, which killed three South Koreans and the Egyptian driver, added the department.
