Your Daily Muslim: Sarah Fahmy

Brandeis University recently withdrew an honorary degree it was going to present to ex-Muslim writer Ayaan Hirsi Ali, a former member of Dutch parliament. Ali has spoken out against Islam since her de-conversion, and is respected by counterjihadists and many academics for her illustrious accomplishments. Why did Brandeis withdraw the degree from Ali? Because of backlash from idiot leftists and Muslims. Among the voices in the raging cacophony was senior Sarah Fahmy, a member of the Muslim Students Association.

Fahmy started a petition on change.org asking people to speak out against Ali receiving the degree. The petition used the typical overdramatic, hyperbolic language we’ve come to expect from Muslims and their left-wing allies. “It has come as a shock to our community due to her extreme Islamophobic beliefs, that Ayaan Hirsi Ali would be receiving an Honorary Degree in Social Justice this year,” the petition states. “The selection of Hirsi Ali to receive an honorary degree is a blatant and callous disregard by the administration of not only the Muslim students, but of any student who has experienced pure hate speech. It is a direct violation of Brandeis University’s own moral code as well as the rights of Brandeis students.” What about Islam’s extreme anti-woman beliefs? Cue silence. As for the rights of Brandeis students – how are anyone’s rights being infringed upon by a brave woman receiving an honor for her accomplishments? Seems to me like Fahmy is being dramatic and completely unrealistic with that claim. Then again, that’s nothing new for a Muslim.

“This is a real slap in the face to Muslim students,” Fahmy said regarding the degree. Oh really? What about all the slaps in the face women like Ali have had to endure from husbands in arranged marriages? (Qur. 4:34) It’s a slap in the face to every woman worldwide who is oppressed by Islam that Ali was denied this honor.

Fahmy continued: “But it’s not just the Muslim community that is upset but students and faculty of all religious beliefs. A university that prides itself on social justice and equality should not hold up someone who is an outright Islamophobic.” I think Fahmy means leftist/appeaser faculty and students. Ayaan Hirsi Ali is one of the fiercest voices for social justice on the planet today. Having endured so much during her childhood and early adulthood in Somalia, Ali is truly a champion of oppressed women. For anyone to belittle her and claim she isn’t an exemplar of social justice is not just absurd, it’s abhorrent. Any definition of “social justice” that doesn’t line up with Ali’s dream of liberating oppressed Muslimahs is no justice at all.
