Senior figures in Al Qaeda want to see an end to women being smuggled into Syria. Abu Muhammad al-Maqdisi, an Al Qaeda leader and influential jihadist ideologue who is jailed in Jordan, sent an urgent message to Jabhat al-Nusra leader Abu Mohammad al-Jawlani this week via a closed jihadi forum. In it, he called on al-Jawlani to issue a decree completely banning the smuggling of women from Jordan into Syria. Al-Maqdisi claims that the women, who are being actively encouraged by Al Nusra to come to Syria, are unduly exposed to rape, torture and imprisonment by the Syrian army and sometimes by the smugglers themselves.
Al-Maqdisi's message reads as follows:
"We have [already] called upon the Mujahideen once in the past to stop pushing women to cross the border so they won't fall in the hands of the tyrant army and many smart brothers [complied], yet a small part of our brothers [are still carrying on this practice]. We have discovered cases of rape and murder by the Syrian army and the smugglers. Therefore we ask you to issue a decree absolutely forbidding the smuggling of women."
