HUMAN RIGHTS ACTIVISTS VOICE CONCERNS OVER RISE IN NUMBER OF "BRIDE KIDNAPPINGS" INVOLVING UNDERAGE GIRLS AND ACCUSE LAW ENFORCEMENT OF TURNING A BLIND EYE (KYRGYZSTAN)















Human rights activists are sounding the alarm, as the recent increase in theft of girls aged 15-17 years.



Annually in Kyrgyzstan fixed about 10,000 facts of bride kidnapping, and half the girls marry not of their own accord. Therefore, international organizations and NGOs call to strengthen the fight against theft brides.



Last year, the Criminal Procedure Code was amended in Kyrgyzstan. In accordance with the changes for stealing brides imposes liability to imprisonment from 7 to 10 years. Human rights activists believe that the law does not work and accused law enforcement and judicial authorities of indifference.




In each village there are cases where a group of guys abducts the girl, the woman ran up to her with a white handkerchief, and in extreme cases, some old women lie at the threshold that the girl did not dare to step over it.According to the international organization Freedom House, in Kyrgyzstan annually fixed about 10,000 facts of bride kidnapping. International human rights organizations refer to their studies and claim that 30-50% of girls marry after the abduction.



According to Freedom House, about two thousand girls are subjected to domestic violence after the abduction. 22% of marriages based on bride kidnapping, sooner or later end up in divorce.



The leader of the human rights organization "Aikyn Bagyt" Munara Beknazarov concerned about cases of abduction of schoolgirls. 20% of respondents said the organization girls were abducted at the age of 18.



According to the MOI, compared with 2012, last year received more allegations of bride kidnapping. According to ministry spokesman Zhorobay Abdraimov , last year received 27 applications:



- In 2013, the country recorded 27 cases of bride kidnapping. In two cases, were abducted underage girls. Were established personality 56 people who were involved in the theft of brides. 52 of them were prosecuted under Article 154-155 of Criminal Procedure.
