Former inspector-general of police, Tun Haniff Omar today expressed fear that the action of non-Muslims questioning the decisions of the National Fatwa Council could cause disunity among the country's multireligious society.
He said this (non-Muslims questioning the edicts made for Muslims) had never happened before, and warned that if this continued, it could hamper the effort of making Malaysia a developed country (by 2020).
"If they (non-Muslims) are not knowledgeable about Islam, then why make comments about Islam? Before, if the ulama (religious scholars) issued a fatwa (edict), the non-Muslims would not comment as the edict was for Muslims."
